Director of Photography
The DoP is in charge of whole of the camera crew and it is up to them to make sure that the vision of the director is made possible. This means they will be heavily involved in both the production and pre-production stages of the film making as well as often having a small role during post production process. They will also be responsible for all of the camera equipment needed: making sure that it is ordered to set and distributed to the correct crew members. Whilst working as a DOP I used Cannon 650D cameras which I connected up to RODE microphones. we also used Dado lights to make it easy to capture all of the footage we needed to at night.
Editor
The editor is in charge of the arrangement/compostition of scenes, during the post production stage of the film. It is their job to place the footage gained into an order that effectively tells the story and keeps audiences interested. The editor also adds in things like music and sound/visual effects although usually they are helped with this by team. The editors pressence is needed most during the post production stage of making the film, however they will also usually contibute to the pre and production stages; making sure that the shots will work well enough during the editing stage and suggesting other shots to be taken for editing purposes later.
The main difference between these roles is how what resources they are given and what they need to produce: With the DoP being responsible for the recording of the footage that will be given to the editor. The Director of photography will spend a lot of time alongside the director making sure that what he plans to do and how he plans to shoot the film fits in with the directors vision and gets the best possible results for all of the scenes. The director of photography will also have to make sure that to get enough takes of scenes that the editor has sufficient footage to work with.
The DoP will also have to make a footage log for the editor, this will mean that they can easily find whatever they need quicker and can keep track of their resources.
The amount of equipment needed by the DoP can vary depending on the production. For example some films will require multiple cameras that can be used at once and wide array of lenses that all capture the image differently. They will also usually be given a team that they will need to communicate with so often be given something like walkie talkies to make this process easier.
As an editor I used the program adobe premier pro to run edit all of the footage that we captured during the production stage. I used an Apple Macintosh to run this software, I used on of these are they are often credited as being more useful for tasks like editing videos and photos.
