LO2 - Understanding skills needed to carry out specific media roles

Verbal communication

Because of how the editor's job is based around the use of the resources produced by others parts of the team. It means that to have the best understanding of all the footage and sound that is available they will need to be talking to the other members of the team. During the production of the short film I made with fellow students as a part of my course at UTC sheffield, I also took part in pre and production so when it came to postproduction I had a good idea of what I need to do. However I also wasn't the only person taking part in the editing, so there had to be strong communication between everyone or the edit of the film would end up becoming messy and inconsistent within its styles.

Creativity/Originality

As a DOP it is important to be able to formulate images in your mind based of the script and locations. To get the most interesting shots you must also be able to think outside the box and compose your image in ways that mightn’t be as obvious as more conventional shots.
As an editor, creativity is important for cutting together a scene in a way that is both cohesive but doesn't just become boring for viewers to watch. Good editing can be used as a storytelling element within the film and can improve a scene massively.

Written Communication

DOP  not only plays a major role in the production stage but has a large amount to do during the pre production stage. the work that they do in this stage will be essential to the work of almost every other member of the crew, so it is important that they are able to communicate with other members of the crew to make sure that they footage they capture fits the requirements of the whole team.
The editor is one of those team members who would need to stay in contact with the DOP as they will need to make sure that the footage they gather can be put together cohesively. Also they will need to communicate with other team members like the sound team to ensure that they have all the resources they need. They will also need to stay in close contact with director, script writer and producers to ensure that original vision of the film can be produced.

Areas for Improvement

From what I've seen throughout working as a DOP and Editor throughout this project, I've learnt that to be make the best possible product and to avoid the most stress throughout working, I need to have strong communication with other members of the crew whilst not relying on them. This is because of how as a DOP you're creating resources that will be integral to many other jobs throughout production. and as an editor all of resources are created by people in different roles so it is important to make sure that they're creating resources that can be used effectively and compliment each other well.  However you also need to have your own strong sense of creativity and ideas for how to make the film as good as possible, because simply relying on other people without putting in any extra work/research you won't be able create anything that isn't bland and will likely not work cohesively and could make the narrative difficult to follow.
